1873-CC Seated Liberty Dime, w/ Arrows

As one of the “Big Four,” the saga of the 1873-CC Seated Liberty dime (w/ Arrows) is similar to that of the other three members of this exclusive club: the 1871-CC, 1872-CC, and 1874-CC dimes.

Arrows were added in 1873 to the obverse design to signify a slight increase in silver content. There exists one lone example of the 1873-CC dime without arrows, and is worth millions.

Because of economic uncertainty roiling the eastern and midwestern states during the Civil War and in the years beyond, coins in those regions were routinely hoarded. Accordingly, the newly established Carson City Mint limited dime production to only what was needed in the western states, resulting in relatively small mintages for the “Big Four.”(1)

The mintage of the 1873-CC Arrows dime was 18,791, of which only 125 are estimated to be extant.(2)

The 1873-CC is rare in any condition, especially in grades better than EF-40. Any collector fortunate enough to claim ownership of this popular coin can be confident of continued price increases over time.
